Detoxification is the first step in getting well from alcohol and drugs. Alcohol and mind-altering drugs act like poisons in our bodies. The more science studies addiction and alcoholism, the more harmful effects we find. Alcohol has been abused for thousands of years so we have a wealth of knowledge regarding the negative impact of drinking on our health. Chronic alcohol abuse and intoxication can cause irreversible changes in the brain (encephalopathy), gastritis and stomach ulcers, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), liver inflammation and scarring (cirrhosis), death of the nerves (neuropathy), irreversible dysfunction of the heart (cardiomyopathy), and these are only some of the physical effects! Aside from physical problems, there are damages to our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. More recently as we study other drugs of abuse, we are discovering some of the damaging effects they have on the body. Much of this damage is reversible and the body and mind can return to normal functioning after stopping the drugs. Stopping drinking or taking drugs of abuse allows our body to eliminate the damaging chemicals, Good nutrition and special attention to vitamins also help to repair problems. Sometimes we recommend the use of herbs and dietary supplements to speed up the healing process.
