We can prevent suffering and avoid medical complications of withdrawal

When you stop abusing drugs you have taken regularly, some parts of the body complain.  Previously the medical field only identified a handful of withdrawal syndromes but now in the field of Addiction Medicine we find there are withdrawal syndromes for nearly all drugs of abuse.

It is very important to obtain medical attention from experienced caregivers to oversee your withdrawal.   Dr. Howalt has many years of hands-on experience treating the wide variety of withdrawal syndromes.  It is best to treat withdrawal early with medicines to prevent serious complications and to avoid unnecessary suffering before it occurs.

Some withdrawal syndromes are medically dangerous.  Severe alcohol withdrawal can lead to delirium tremens (also know as the "DT's") which is a serious medical emergency requiring hospitalization.  It is not uncommon for seizures (an electrical storm in the brain) to occur with alcohol withdrawal. Opiate withdrawal is extremely unpleasant, involving severe chills, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and muscle aches to name a few; sometimes serious complications can occur.  Marijuana, amphetamine and other withdrawals each have specific characteristics.

At SLOARC we feel treating withdrawal is extremely important.  There is no reason to suffer unnecessary withdrawal symptoms.  Some people think addicts should experience all the worst of withdrawal as punishment, to serve as a reminder of the consequences of drug abuse.  This is cruel, ineffective and totally unnecessary.  Addicts already suffer plenty as a result of their disease.  There is no need to pile on more misery.
