Therapy and Spiritual Healing

One on one personal counseling, group therapy, and active participation in 12 Step recovery programs are all essential parts of finding relief from addiction.  If addicts could sit at home alone and stop using drugs they wouldn't be addicts!  "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result" reveals the core problem of addiction; faulty thinking.   We are accustomed to using our intellect and thinking to address problems, but with addiction the mind and the "thinker" is broken!  How can this riddle be solved?

Action!  Addicts need to separate their thoughts from their behavior.  While this is simple to say, it goes against our primal instinct.  In the normal state of affairs we think, then we act.

Those who suffer from addiction can be considered as having two people in one body.  One of them is the unique person evolved from their unique experiences in the world, and the other is the "addict".  Interestingly, the addict personality is very generic, with very predictable thoughts and behavior.  The key to recovery is learning ways to prevent the addict from controlling behavior.  You can imagine there are two completely different colored thoughts inside the mind of those afflicted.  Blue thoughts that come from the survivor, and red thoughts that come from the addict.  To recover, one has to learn to recognize what color each particular thought is, and successfully make the decision to only act on blue thoughts.

Fortunately, addiction is a common disease, and a lot is known about exactly how to find freedom and recovery.  Many addicts have already found the road to long-term sobriety, and you can too!  The wonderful news is these men and women gather together regularly to share their individual knowledge and skills with one another, and anyone who wants to listen.  This is what 12 Step meetings are about.  The "group" can survive and make the right decisions where each individual alone can not.

At SLOARC we provide counseling, therapy, and guidance along with prescription medications to give you the tools to find long- term recovery and sobriety.
